ASTM D1654 Test Method of Painted or Coated Specimens

The purpose of the ASTM D1654 test method is to provide a standardized procedure for the evaluation of corrosion performance of coatings and metal pretreatments subjected to one of a variety of corrosion resistance exposures.  ASTM D1654 describes the scribing of coated samples through the coating layer and into the substrate using one of a number of scribe tools.  ASTM D1654 then calls for the exposure of the scribed panels in one of a number of corrosion-inducing exposures, including ASTM B117 , D822, D870, D1014, D1735, D2247, D2803, D4141, D4585, D4587, D5894, D 6695, G85 , G87, and others.  Similar or identical ISO, EN, DIN, and OEM corrosive exposures are also applicable.

  • ASTM D610 “Standard Test Method for Evaluating Degree of Rusting on Painted Steel Surfaces”

  • ASTM D714 “Standard Test Method for Evaluating Degree of Blistering of Paints”

Assured Testing Services places parts or panels inside corrosion resistance exposure chambers, exposing them continually for specified periods of time.  Following exposure, the samples are evaluated for corrosion resistance performance.  Common corrosion state evaluations listed below:

ASTM D1654 uses corrosion creepage perpendicular to the scribe line as a quantitative measurement of corrosion performance.  The less corrosion creep on either side of the scribe, the higher the corrosion resistance performance.  ASTM D1654 describes the use of one of a number of methods to remove coating along the scribe line undercut by corrosion so that the full width of the corrosion creep width can be measured with a scale or caliper.  The coating removal methods specified by ASTM D1654 include:  Scraping with a spatula, picking off with a knife, chemical stripping of the coating, air blow-off, or power washing.

The arithmetic mean width of the corroded area on both sides of the scribe line is calculated for a number of locations along the scribe line, and ASTM D1654 uses that mean width to determine a rating number from 0 to 10, with 10 representing zero (0) corrosion creep.

ASTM D1654 provides for evaluation of unscribed areas by reference to ASTM D714 for similar numeric evaluation of blistering of the painted surface, and ASTM D610 for numeric evaluation of rust coverage of the painted surface.

ASTM D1654, ASTM D714, and ASTM D610 reference other ASTM, ISO, EN, DIN, and OEM standards which Assured Testing Services maintains on its ISO 17025 scope.
