Automotive Interior Testing

Odor

Odor testing of automotive interior components evaluates the smell emitted by materials used in the vehicle's cabin to ensure they are acceptable to consumers. This testing is important because unpleasant or strong odors can negatively impact passenger comfort and satisfaction, potentially harming a brand’s reputation.

Odor testing can be performed by trained human panels or by analytical methods. For human evaluations, material samples are heated in sealed chambers to simulate real-world conditions, and assessors rate the intensity and quality of the odors using standardized scales. Analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography, may also be used to identify and quantify specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) responsible for odors.
