Standard Test Method for Adhesion and Cohesion Strength of Thermal Spray Coatings
ASTM C633 is used to measure the adhesion of thermal spray coatings such as ceramics and metal oxides. ASTM C633 is peformed on cylindrical test specimens. The coating is bonded to a loading fixture using a bonding agent (such as epoxy). A tensile load is then applied at a fixed speed, normal to the plane of the cooating until failure occurs. The degree of adhesion (failure at the substrate) or cohesion (failure within the coating) is determined using the maximum load and cross sectional area of the test specimen.
