ASTM D638

Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics

ASTM D638

ASTM D638 is a test method used to determine the tensile properties of plastics. It involves subjecting a plastic specimen to tensile  stress until it breaks. This test measures properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and modulus of elasticity.

ASTM D638 is crucial for understanding how plastics behave under stress, helping manufacturers ensure that the plastic material meets the necessary performance standards for durability, flexibility, and strength.  ASTM D638 can also be used as a benchmark for material changes before and after environmental tests such as accelerated weathering tests like UV, xenon arc, thermal cycling, sulfur dioxide, or other corrosion exposures.
