ASTM E8
Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials

ASTM E8 is used for tension testing of metallic samples of all kinds, including flat samples (dog bones), round samples as well as other sample types, typically at ambient conditions. The test is used to determine tensile properties such as yield strength, elongation, tensile strength, and reduction in area.
ASM E8 is performed using a universal testing machine. Test requirements are specified for a variety of sample types including tensile dog bones, cylindrical test specimens, wire, metal sheet, tubular materials, and threaded specimens such as fasteners. These are put into the grips of a universal testing machine, and subjected to tension loading at a constant crosshead speed.
Testing per ASTM E8 is used on a myriad of raw materials and components alike for troubleshooting, optimizing design and ensuring product quality and safety.
